Cape, 34-21 |
Cape Henlopen 34, Seaford 21 Photo: Seaford running back Brian Batson on 42-yard touchdown run. LEWES -- It's been awhile since the Seaford High School football program struck fear in its opponents.
In falling to 1-1 overall, the Blue Jays led 14-0 in the second quarter before a "fill-in" running back, Larry Miller, put Cape on his back. Miller started Cape's comeback with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and by the time he was through, the replacement for injured starter Thaddeus Shockley had 286 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Miller's outburst overshadowed a sterling effort by Seaford fullback Brian Batson. Batson rushed for 149 yards and scored three times. Seaford took its 14-0 advantage with a mixture of crisp passes and powerful runs by quarterback Nick Pegelow, Batson and tailback Aaron White. Batson scored from 2 yards out to put Seaford ahead 7-0 with 1:55 remaining in the first quarter and scored again from 1 yard out with 7:02 left in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead. Cape battled back to within 14-13 by halftime and went ahead in the third quarter, 19-14, on a 91-yard touchdown run by Miller with 8:10 left in the third. The Blue Jays, though, came right back after the shock of the 91-yard run and less than two minutes later, Batson ripped off his own long run, this one of 42 yards, to give Seaford the lead again at 21-19. Miller would strike again, however, as his 66-yard TD run and two-point conversion run with 10:21 remaining in the game put Cape up 27-21. Seaford had a couple of chances to regain the lead. On their last drive, the Blue Jays, starting from their own 2 after holding Cape on downs, saw their final hopes disappear when Cape linebacker Kyle Travis intercepted a Pegelow pass and returned it for a touchdown.
