The Blue Jays dropped out of contention in the Henlopen Conference Southern Division race and most likely out of the state tournament chase with the loss to Smyrna and standout running back Mike Pennewell.

Seaford center Jason EndersPennewell, a first team all-stater last season, victimized the Jays with 274 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 28 carries. The Blue Jays are now 1-2 in the South and 2-4 overall.

Seaford trailed just 12-10 at halftime as they scored on a 4-yard run by fullback Brian Batson, who rushed for 106 yards on 24 carries, and a 39-yard field goal by kicker Nick Dunk.

Batson also scored on a 3-yard run to pull the Jays within 18-16 after three quarters.

The Eagles, however, scored 14 unanswered points in the final quarter for the victory.

Seaford travels to Woodbridge for a Henlopen South game on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m.

Woodbridge rose to 2-1 in the South and 4-3 overall with a last-minute 20-17 win over Lake Forest on Oct. 19.

Smyrna rose to 1-1 in the South and 3-3 overall.
