Milford, Central Ousted
in First Round Matches

The Milford and Sussex Central high school boys' soccer teams were eliminated from the 2001 Delaware state tournament with first round losses on Wednesday, Nov. 7.

Milford, seeded 8th, lost to 9th-seeded Tatnall 4-1, while Sussex Central, seeded 14th, fell to No. 3 Salesianum 7-0.

Milford fell behind 3-0 in the first half before Janel Legros scored a goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.

The Bucs trailed Tatnall 25-21 in shots. Milford goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe posted 10 saves. Freshman Will Brechter scored two goals to lead Tatnall, the Independent Conference champion.

Sussex Central never got untracked against the powerful Sals.

Salesianum led 24-2 in shots and 2-0 in corner kicks as five different players, led by Richard Henderson's two goals, scored.

Sussex Central goalkeeper Mike Dondarski recorded 10 saves.

On Tuesday, Nov. 6, Indian River's magical 2001 season ended with a 4-1 loss to A.I. DuPont in the first round of the Delware boys' soccer tournament.

The Indians rode an 8-match win streak into the tournament to earn the fifth seed. They finished their season at 13-4.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, Indian River scored its goal on a penalty kick by Brandt Mais with five minutes left.

A.I., however, responded with another goal to head into the half with a 3-1 lead.

The Indians posted a remarkable turnaround from last season's 6-9-1 record to win the Henlopen Conference Southern Division championship and earn the highest seed of any conference team in the state tournament under head coach Howard Gerken.

In another first round match on Wednesday, Nov. 7, No. 11 St. Elizabeth nipped No. 6 Concord 1-0 in overtime.

In other first round matches on Tuesday, Nov. 6, No. 7 Dover lost to Wilmington Friends 2-1, top-seeded Wilmington Christian blanked Caesar Rodney 4-0, and No. 4 Glasgow blanked No. 13 Red Lion 6-0.

In Saturday's quarterfinals, St. Elizabeth meets Salesianum, St. Mark's takes on Friends, Wilmington Christian faces Tatnall, and Glasgow squares off with A.I. DuPont.

The semifinals will be Nov. 14 with the finals slated for Nov. 17.
