Caesar Rodney 16, Sussex Tech 14 Photo: Sussex Tech quarterback Marcus Morris The Sussex Tech High School football team may not be undefeated anymore. It may not win the Henlopen Conference Northern Division title.
Despite a 16-14 loss to Caesar Rodney in their Henlopen North opener, the Ravens proved their 4-0 start this season was no fluke by taking the perennial state-wide powerhouse to the limit. The Ravens fell behind 10-0 early against CR but rather than folding as they would have in the past few seasons, they bounced back to take the lead by the third period. Fullback Kevin Maull, who finished with 131 yards rushing on 11 carries, put the Ravens back in the game with an 80-yard touchdown run. Down 10-7 at halftime, the Ravens then went ahead, 14-10, on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Marcus Morris. The Riders came right back, however, on a 5-yard touchdown run on fourth down by 6-foot-2, 230-pound tailback Stephen Beckham for a 16-14 third quarter lead. Even though Beckham punished the Ravens with 217 yards on 26 carries, the Raven defense came up big when it had to by stopping Rider drives on the Raven 6- and 22-yard lines. The Riders also got a 22-yard field goal by Edward Curley. Curley replaced regular Rider placekicker Megan Collins, who was injured. The Ravens continue their rugged Henlopen North schedule with a home game against powerhouse Dover on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. Dover routed St. Mark's 26-0 in another game on Friday, Oct. 5, to rise to 5-0 overall. .
