Loss for Raiders |

Laurel 8, Woodbridge 6 Photo: Woodbridge head coach John Parker. The Woodbridge High School football team suffered a serious blow to its hopes to recapture the Henlopen Conference Southern Division championship this season.
Woodbridge trailed 8-0 through three quarters following a Laurel touchdown and safety but pulled within 8-6 early in the fourth quarter on a 51-yard run by quarterback Jamil Young. Young then scored on the two-point conversion run, but in a game filled with penalties against both teams, the run was called back for holding. The Raiders' best chance to take the lead after that ended at Laurel's 33 yard-line late in the game on a drive that started at the Woodbridge 37. Young finished with 11 carries for 105 yards rushing. He also threw for 77 yards. Halfback Andre Cannon ran 16 times for 145 yards. The Raiders, at 2-3 overall, are under .500 for the first time since the 1998 season. Woodbridge continues its conference schedule with a home game against Smyrna on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. Smyrna lost to Polytech 13-7 in another game on Friday, Oct. 5, but the Eagles feature dangerous running back Mike Pennewell, a first-team all-stater last season.
