Woodbridge 16, Smyrna 13 Photos: Woodbridge kicker John Passwaters Woodbridge picked up a much-needed win on 30-yard field goal by kicker John Passwaters on the game's final play.
Tied 13-13, the Raiders took over with less than five minutes remaining in the game and drove the ball to the Smyrna 13 to set Passwaters up. "He just calmly kicked the field goal," said Woodbridge head coach John Parker of his sophomore kicker, who bounced back from a miss on a similar field goal attempt in a double-overtime loss to Sussex Tech two weeks ago. Woodbridge, behind an improving young offensive line of John Handley, Mike Eastman, John Parker, G.L. Jefferson, Cody Hartzel and tight ends Bobby James and Matt Short, put together two fourth quarter drives to score the 10 points they needed to overcome a 13-6 deficit entering the period. Besides the drive for the field goal, the Raiders drove 99 yards for the tying points following a goal-line stand by the defense after Smyrna had a first-and-goal on the Woodbridge 5. On that 19-play drive, Jamil Young hit Emilio Perry with a 15-yard pass on fourth down to keep the drive alive and lead to halfback Andre Cannon's 4-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Cannon carried 15 times during the drive. Cannon led the Raiders with 140 yards rushing. Young added 53 more yards on the ground including a 5-yard touchdown run that gave Woodbridge a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Smyrna took a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter on a 9-yard run by quarterback Daniel Henry. The Eagles went ahead 13-6 on a 25-yard TD pass from Henry to Roger Bleen. Woodbridge travels to Lake Forest for another big Henlopen South game on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. Woodbridge Index | Sports Index | News Index |
