With Lofty Goals The Woodbridge High School boys' soccer team made a nice recovery from its winless 1999 season with a 7-9 record last season. With that kind of momentum, the Blue Raiders have their sights set this year on a state tournament berth. But head coach Scott Bleile knows he'll have to replace some of last year's top offensive firepower and his goalkeeper to continue his program's improvement this year. The Raiders lost goalkeeper Eddie Henry and top scorer Josh Judy to Goldey Beacom College and the University of Delaware, respectively. In addition, Robby Hunsberger and Ben Passwaters, two other key offensive players, graduated. But the Raiders aren't without some ammunition, as junior midfielder Corbin Bean, senior defender Jimmy Willey, and junior sweeper Tyler Yerkes, who did their share of scoring last year, return. The goalkeeping duties will fall to junior J.R. Longfellow. Following is a capsule preview of the Raiders' 2001 season. Head Coach: Scott Bleile (second year, 7-9) 2000 Record: 7-9 overall Key Returning Players: Corbin Bean (MF), Jimmy Willey (Def.), Tyler Yerkes (Swp.), Lyle Neal (Def.), Travis Graves (Def.), Tory Stogner, Jason Diebel (MF) Key Players Lost: Eddie Henry (GK, Goldey Beacom), Josh Judy (University of Delaware), Matt Adams, Ben Passwaters, Robby Hunsberger Key Newcomers: Nelson Burbage (F), Richard Idler (MF), Joey LeBlanc (MF), J.R. Longfellow (GK), Blake Little (F) Coach Bleile's Comments: "We're hoping to make the state tournament. We are very young at key positions but we have a good group of returning juniors and strong defenders at back." Woodbridge Index | Sports Index |
