The Cape Henlopen High School football team fell apart in the second half of its season-opener and fell to Division II Laurel, 41-13.
First, the Vikings watched Laurel recover the opening kickoff of the second half and turn that miscue into a quick touchdown. Then, following a Laurel touchdown pass, the Vikings had a punt blocked after a bad snap to give Laurel the ball at the Cape 9. To make matters worse, the Vikings stopped the Bulldogs twice -- once on third down and once on a fumble -- inside their 10, only to give Laurel new life each time with a penalty for too many men on the field and with a penalty for unnecessary roughness in the fight for the fumble.
Cape then coughed up another fumble at its own 27, leading to another Laurel touchdown pass that went between two Cape defenders for a 35-6 deficit with 3:29 left in the period. The Vikings did settle down after that as they scored on a 3-yard pass from quartback Zack Plummer to tight end Sean Sweeney to pull within 35-13 in the fourth. Running back Stephen Shockley scored Cape's touchdown in the first half. Cape will have a week off to work out the kinks before visiting Christiana in a nonconference game on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1:30 p.m. Cape Index | Sports Index |
