Title for 3rd Time |
Delmar 17, Smyrna 0 Photos: Delmar running back Maurice Stewart and defensive back Tyler Downes. The Delmar High School football team wrapped up its third consecutive Henlopen Conference Southern Division championship with the win over the last team that had a chance to prevent it. The Wildcats rose to 5-0 in the Henlopen South with one regular season game remaining to open a two-game lead over Smyrna, which fell to 3-2 in the division with its second straight loss.,p> Laurel remains one game behind the Wildcats, but even if Delmar lost to Woodbridge next week in its regular season finale, it would win the South because it defeated Laurel during the regular season. The victory also clinched a third straight state tournament berth for the two-time defending Division II state champion Wildcats. Counting state tournament games, the Wildcats, now 9-0 overall this season, have won 32 straight games.
Running back Maurice Stewart sparked the victory over Smyrna by scoring both of the Wildcats' touchdowns. Stewart scored his first touchdown on a 17-yard run and his second on a 10-yard pass from quarterback John Ellis. The Wildcats hurt themselves with 13 penalties, including two that called back a touchdown run by Ellis and a punt return for a touchdown by Tyler Downes. Downes was a stalwart defensively, as he intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble. Delmar Index | Sports Index |
