Delmar 42, Woodbridge 7
The Delmar High School football team capped another unbeaten regular season with the Henlopen Conference Southern Division victory. The Wildcats concluded their regular season with a 10-0 record for the second consecutive year. They also went 6-0 in the Henlopen South for the second straight year. The two-time Division II state champions now await word on who they will face in the first round of this year's state tournament on Nov. 29 or Nov. 30. In winning their 33rd straight game, the Wildcats spotted Woodbridge a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before erupting for four touchdowns and 27 points in the second period. Vince Stewart started the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown run with 11:51 left in the second quarter. At the 9:00 mark, Tyler Downes returned a punt 69 yards for a score for his second punt return for a touchdown in November. End Demeris Cannon then hauled in a 45-yard TD pass from quarterback Jon Ellis and Vince Stewart closed the first half scoring with a 6-yard run with 1:04 remaining.
Delmar averaged 7.6 yards per carry as Vince Stewart totalled 97 of his team's 213 yards rushing. Cuffee and Ellis also ran well with 49 and 38 yards, respectively. Ellis also shined in the air as he connected on 5 of 8 passes for 117 yards and the touchdown. He threw one interception. Cannon caught two of Ellis' passes for 84 yards and picked off a pass at defensive back. Delmar Index | Sports Index |
