The Delmar High School football closed in on another Henlopen Conference Southern Division crown with the easy victory over Lake Forest. The Wildcats, now 5-0 in the South and 8-0 overall, can clinch their third straight division title on Friday, Nov. 8, with a win over visiting Smyrna. Delmar hosts Smyrna, which fell to 3-1 and 7-1 with a loss to Laurel on Nov. 1, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The two-time Division II state champions used big plays against Lake Forest to roll to their 31st consecutive victory. Behind three long touchdown runs by running back Vince Stewart and a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown by Tyler Downes, Delmar jumped out to a 29-0 halftime lead. Stewart, who finished with 154 yards rushing on just 4 carries, scored on runs of 69 and 45 yards in the first quarter and 32 yards in the second period.
Freddie Baker concluded Delmar's scoring with an 18-yard run in the game's final minute. Ten different Wildcats got to carry the ball as Delmar totalled 239 yards rushing on only 22 attempts. Quarterback Jon Ellis completed 4 of 5 passes for 62 yards and a PAT pass to tight end Michael Hunt. Chip Cuffee caught one of those passes for 37 yards. In addition to his field goal, Collins kept Lake Forest deep in its own territory with four touchbacks on kickoffs, and the defense did the rest. In 8 games, the Wildcats have allowed only 76 points. Against Lake Forest, Cannon also picked off two other passes, while defensive end Scott Price recovered a fumble. For the season, Stewart continues to be the Wildcats' leading rusher with 769 yards on 75 carries. He has also scored 12 touchdowns. The Wildcats are outscoring their opponents 35.0 to 9.5 points per game.
