for 30th Straight |
Delmar 49, Indian River 14
The Delmar High School football removed another stumbling block from its path to a potential third straight Henlopen Conference Southern Division championship. The Wildcats stormed past the Indians with 42 unanswered points to break a 7-7 first quarter tie and rise to 3-0 in the division and 7-0 overall with their 30th consecutive win going back to the 2000 season. IR fell to 2-1 in the South and 3-3 overall as its three-game winning streak was snapped. The two-time defending Division II state champions led 7-0 when Indian River tied the game on a 64-yard fumble return. Delmar wouldn't make many mistakes after that, though, as its defense handcuffed the Indians' offense and scored a touchdown on a 22-yard fumble return by Sam Warren.
Stewart added two more touchdowns on runs of 1 yard and 23 yard. Quarterback John Ellis scored a touchdown on the ground, rushed for 34 yards, and hit 2 of his 4 passes for 86 yards. The defense, meanwhile, held IR to 86 total yards including just 28 in the first half. Warren's fumble return was the fifth of the season for a defense that has allowed only five touchdowns in seven games. The Wildcats totalled 361 yards of offense with Stewart rushing for 93 yards Delmar has this week off before visiting Lake Forest in a Henlopen South game on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. Delmar Index | Sports Index |
