Smyrna 10, Indian River 0

The Indian River High School football team finished its season with its second Henlopen Conference Southern Division loss in a row, but it still showed a dramatic improvement over its 2001 campaign.

The Indians went 4-6 this year after suffering an 0-10 mark last year. They had also lost 14 straight games dating back to the 2000 season before breaking into the win column again this year.

IR finished 2-4 in the Henlopen South.

The Indians' offense couldn't find the end zone against Smyrna's stingy defense. Smyrna finished its season with an 8-2 record behind a tough defense that recorded five shutouts.

The Indians had two shots at scoring but came up empty as they were shut out for the first time this season. On their first possession, IR moved the ball to Smyrna's 27 but were stopped by Smyrna's defense.

Then, after the Indian defense stopped Smyrna at the IR 4, Indian quarterback Ryan Warner connected with tight end John Bulkeley for 56 yards. That drive also stalled and ended when a field goal bounced off the crossbar.

Defensively, the Indians were led by Chris White and Justin Hoban, who each recovered a fumble.

Smyrna scored the winning points on a 66-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daniel Henry to tight end Thomas Wright late in the first quarter.
