Laurel 42, Indian River 8
The Laurel High School football team continued its march to what it hopes will be its first state tournament berth since 1995 with the convincing victory. The Bulldogs rose to 3-1 in the Henlopen Conference Southern Division and 6-1 overall with their third straight victory as fullback Chris Horsey scored on runs of 2 and 15 yards on the way to 92 yards rushing. While the Bulldogs remain behind unbeaten Delmar and Smyrna in the Southern Division standings, winning their final three games against Smyrna, Lake Forest and Seaford would virtually guarantee them a Division II state tournament berth given their wins over Division I Cape Henlopen and Sussex Tech. Laurel's next test in that quest comes at unbeaten Smyrna on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. Smyrna blanked Milford 30-0 on Friday, Oct. 25, to rise to 3-0 in the Henlopen South and 7-0 overall. On Friday, the Bulldogs started quickly against Indian River as they put 26 points on the board in the first period.
Laurel went ahead 29-0 in the second quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Romero and 36-0 in the third period on a 40-yard run by Jeremy Jones. The Bulldogs' final touchdown was scored on a 1-yard run by Tykie Hill. It was the third time this season that Laurel has scored more than 40 points. The defense, meanwhile, has allowed only 11.4 points a game. Laurel Index | Sports Index |
