Laurel 62, Seaford 0
The Laurel High School football team's quest for a Division II state tournament berth continued on the strength of quarterback Andy Hartstein's arm in the rout of its nearby rivals. With Hartstein throwing 5 touchdown passes, the Bulldogs, now 8-1 overall with wins over two Division I teams this season, have the inside track on an at-large state tournament berth. It would be their first tournament berth since 1995. In the renewal of the long-standing rivalry that was cancelled last year due to concerns over threats of violence, and playing their first game sicne the death of starting linebacker Brock Montague in a car accident two weeks ago, the Bulldogs had little trouble dispatching the undermanned Blue Jays.
Ridley's touchdown catches went for 34 and 62 yards, while Downes' went for 36 and 12 yards. Hartstein threw all of his TD passes in the first half and fullback Chris Horsey added a 3-yard scoring run as Laurel bolted to a 42-0 halftime lead. The Bulldogs scored 20 more points in the second half against a Seaford team depleted by the dismissal of 14 players including their leading offensive players three weeks ago. Horsey scored two more touchdowns, one on a 49-yard run and another on a 3-yard run, to go up 56-0. Rashawn Thompson added the final score on a 19-yard run in the fourth period. The Bulldogs host Lake Forest in a Henlopen South game on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m., in their regular season finale. A win in that game would clinch the state tournament berth for Laurel.
