Besides settling for a 9-1 regular season record instead of the program's first unbeaten record in 20 years, the Knights also lost a home game in the Division I state tournament semifinals Thanksgiving weekend. Instead of hosting that semifinal contest, Central will now have to travel to Wilmington's Baynard Stadium as the No. 3 seed to take on No. 2 St. Mark's on Friday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m. Middletown, in its first year in Division I, finished 8-2 to earn the tournament's fourth seed. The Cavaliers will visit top-seeded William Penn on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 1 p.m. The Knights started quickly against Middletown as quarterback David Pusey followed up a 33-yard reverse by Andrew Weatherly with a 21-yard touchdown pass to tight end Spencer Booth for a 7-0 lead with 1:38 left in the first period. Middletown, however, took advantage of a short punt to take an 8-7 lead with a 25-yard scoring drive with 3:24 remaining before halftime. The Cavaliers then put the game away in the second half with two touchdowns on fourth down plays. First, halfback Andy Snapp scored on a 6-yard run on fourth-and-goal for a 15-7 advantage with 4:05 to go in the third quarter. Then, on the first series of the fourth quarter, Cavalier quarterback Mike Potts connected with Brant Hylinski for a 12-yard scoring toss on fourth-and-11 for the final score of the game. Despite the disappointment of their first loss, the Knights will be going to the Division I state tournament for the third consecutive time. It is the second consecutive year that Central has gone 9-1 in the regular season. SCHS Index | Sports Index |
