Bad Start Dooms
Jays in Opener
2002 Game-by-Game Recap

Friday, Sept. 6, 2002
Lake Forest 27, Seaford 18

A bad start doomed the beginning of the Shawn Larrimore era for the Seaford High School football team.

The Blue Jays, hurt by two turnovers deep in their own territory, surrendered 21 points in the game's first 13 minutes before settling down and outscoring the Spartans 18-6 the rest of the way.

Alternating Beau Moore and Virgil Greene at quarterback, the Blue Jays had problems with the quarterback-center exchanges that led to the lost fumbles.

"I don't know if it was nervousness or what," said Larrimore. "You won't win any games giving up 21 points in the first 13 minutes."

Despite the bad start, Seaford had a chance to make a game of it when it reached Lake Forest's 1-foot line trailing 21-10.

The Jays couldn't punch it in from there, though, and instead of pulling within 21-17, the deflated defense watched Lake Forest's Desmond Felton rip off a game-clinching 91-yard touchdown run.

"I guess I should have kicked a field goal or called a better play on fourth down and the kids would have stayed up," said Larrimore. "Instead, they were dejected and gave up. Then we came back with eight straight points. They never gave up at the end."

Fullback Aaron White led the Blue Jays offensively with 181 yards rushing including two touchdowns. Ryan Shockley booted a field goal and Moore ran in a two-point conversion for the Jays' other points.

Seaford hosts Caravel in another nonconference game on Friday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
