Laurel 19, Sussex Tech 14 Sussex Tech running back Shawn Evans. The Sussex Tech High School football team's dreams for a post-season date were dealt a serious blow with the loss to Division II Laurel.
The win was the second of the season for Laurel over a Division I opponent from the Henlopen North. Tech fell behind 19-0 in the first half and wasn't able to mount a serious challenge in the second half. The Ravens were victimized by a pair of long touchdown passes by Laurel quarterback Andy Hartstein. The Ravens, held to just 19 yards of total offense in the first half, finally got on the board in the fourth quarter when running back Shawn Evans scored from 1 yard out. The Ravens' final score, on a 4-yard run by Evans, didn't come until only 20 seconds remained in the game. The ensuing onsides kick was recovered by Laurel to end any Tech hopes for a miracle comeback. Evans led the Ravens with 78 yards rushing on 8 carries but leading rusher Kevin Maull managed only 13 yards and quarterback Brandon Hudson netted only 11 yards on 8 carries. Tech opens its Henlopen North schedule against visiting cross-town rival Sussex Central on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. Central is unbeaten at 4-0 following a 17-7 win over Christiana on Sept. 27.
