Sussex Central's Cleveland HagansGEORGETOWN -- Despite coming off a Henlopen Conference Northern Division championship in 2002, the Sussex Central High School football team is looking for a little respect.

Central earned a healthy dose of that respect in the second half of a 20-10 victory over rival Sussex Tech on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003.

Completely dominating the second half, the Knights opened the defense of their Northern Division title by improving to 4-0 overall. Tech fell to 2-3 overall.

Because the Knights don't have the high profile players they've had in the past few seasons, this has been considered by many to be a rebuilding year in Georgetown.

And while there is some merit to that observation, veteran head coach John Wells is quick to point out that the Knights did return seven players from last year's standout defense.

"I feel great right now," said Wells after the win over Tech. "We're playing for respect. We feel we've been slighted because we lost some big-name players. We feel that we're playing for respect and we have to go out and earn it. But that's the way you want to get respect ... you want to earn it."

Sussex Tech's T.J. DukesAfter trailing 10-0 in the first half and 10-7 at halftime due to drive-killing penalties, the Knights took complete control of Sussex Tech in the second half.

With the opening possession of the third quarter, Central marched 57 yards in 10 plays, culminating in a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Vance Collins for a 13-10 advantage.

The Knight defense then stopped Tech on three plays, and the offense embarked on another long march, this one covering 62 yards on 12 plays with Pierre Louis bulling over from 1 yard out with 9:29 left in the game.

Ahead 20-10, the defense stiffened on Tech's final drive in the fourth quarter as it stopped the Ravens on fourth down at the Knight 23 with 4:52 remaining. The offense then ran out the clock, as it marched 31 yards on 8 plays despite a fumble and two fumbled snaps.

In the second half, the Knights solved the unbalanced offensive scheme that Tech ran to great effect in the first half.

The scheme opened up large holes for running back Andre Johnson, who carried the ball 6 times for 52 yards of a 13-play, 66-yard scoring drive on the game's opening possession. Fullback Adrian Harris capped that drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put Tech up 7-0 with 6:43 left in the first quarter.

Sussex Central's Pierre LouisTwo possessions later, Tech, taking over at Central's 43, moved 39 yards to the SC 4 before stalling and settling for a 21-yard field goal by Jason Rickards.

Down 10-0, Central then shook off the five penalties that had thwarted its two previous drives and ripped off a 3-play, 58-yard scoring drive thanks to a 39-yard sweep for a touchdown by running back Will James with 2:50 left in the half.

Tech then had another opportunity in the red zone when quarterback Brandon Hudson connected with Justin Hardy on a 55-yard pass play to the Central 19. Two plays later, though, Central defensive back Armando Henry recovered a fumble to end the threat.

Central's defense clamped down on the Ravens after that. After amassing 130 yards rushing in the first half, Tech managed only 39 yards rushing in the second half.

James was the game's leading rusher with 80 yards. Collins finished with 69 yards on the ground -- all in the second half -- while Lewis contributed 59 yards on the ground.

Johnson led Tech's ground game 77 yards, while Harris added 43. Delmar quarterback Brandon Hudson completed 3 of 10 passes for 75 yards and ran for 25 more.

    Quotes ...

Sussex Central head coach John Wells on his team's "smash-mouth" style of football:

"That's been our philosophy for awhile. It's not how big you are. It's how big you play."

Wells on the quarterback Vance Collins' success on quarterback sneaks:

"We went unbalanced and that made them shift down, which gave us some seams in the middle."

    Notes ...
  • Sussex Central has won 8 straight games in the Henlopen Conference Northern Division. The Knights went 5-0 last year to win the North. They haven't lost a game to a Northern Division opponent since a 34-32 loss at Dover on Oct. 19, 2001.

  • While Central continues to dominate the series with its cross-town rival, the games with Tech have become increasingly difficult. After whipping Tech 48-24 in 1999 and 35-6 in 2000, the Knights have beaten Tech by scores of 27-19 in 2001, 15-7 in 2002, and now 20-10 in 2003.

  • Central is off to another strong start. Since 1999, the Knights' worst start has been a 5-0 mark in 2001. That streak ended with the loss to Dover.

  • After a promising 7-3 record in 2001, the Sussex Tech program has hit hard times again. After a 4-6 record in 2002, the Ravens are now 2-3 overall this year. Since Bill Collick took over as head coach in 2000, the program is 15-21.
