Hopes Erased
GEORGETOWN -- Dreams of an unbeaten season and a Henlopen Conference Northern Division championship came crashing to earth for the Sussex Central High School football team on Friday, Nov. 12, 1999. The Golden Knights, ranked fourth in the state, were thoroughly dismantled by top-ranked Caesar Rodney 48-0 to lose any hopes for the North title. The Knights, 5-1 in the division and 8-1 overall, could possibly secure an at-large Division I State Tournament berth if they beat fifth-ranked St. Mark's on Nov. 19 in their regular season finale. St. Mark's defeated Salesianum 21-7 on Nov. 12 to rise to 7-2 overall and remain in the playoff picture. Caesar Rodney rose to 5-0 in the North and 9-0 overall behind a balanced attack that took advantage of three Golden Knight turnovers and saw five players score touchdowns, including two apiece by Richard Booker and Charles Clark. The Riders will still need to beat cross-town rival Dover on Friday, Nov. 19, to claim the Northern Division title and automatic Division I state tournament berth. They likely clinched an at-large berth with the win over Sussex Central, though. The Knights managed only 48 yards of total offense after entering the game outscoring their opponents 31.4 to 9.75 points a game. CR's point total was double the points any team had scored against the Sussex Central defense, which at one point this season registered 14 straight scoreless quarters and three consecutive shutouts. The game marked the return of quarterback Joe Schonewolf for CR. Schonewolf has started the past two seasons but was injured two games ago.
