Game of the Week ... Oct. 22, 1999: Laurel Battles Past Lake Forest Stays in Thick of South Race Story | Scoring | Other Games of the Week Game of the Week Story ... FELTON -- The Laurel High School football team, plagued by fumbles, interceptions and penalties in an 0-3 start, got a couple of good bounces to stay in the thick of the Henlopen Conference Southern Division race on Friday night, Oct. 22, 1999. The Bulldogs' John Cahall scooped up a fumble by teammate Mike Snead on the Lake Forest 5-yard line and ran it in for the winning score in a 19-13 win that raised the Bulldogs' record to 3-1 in the South and 3-3 overall. The Bulldogs are just a half-game behind unbeaten Milford and Woodbridge (both 2-0) in the South. Laurel hosts Milford on Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. The Laurel victory virtually eliminated Lake Forest, the division's pre-season favorite, from the race. The Spartans are 1-2 in the division and 4-3 overall. The fumble and run capped a 15-play, 53-yard drive that saw the Bulldogs hold the ball for more than 8 minutes after Lake Forest tied the game 13-13 with 8:37 remaining. Cahall's score with just 21 seconds left gave Lake Forest virtually no chance to re-tie the score or win. The Bulldogs converted three fourth-down situations during the drive including two conversions by running back Titus Mims and another by Cahall despite driving rains and winds from a cold front that blew in at the start of the fourth period. Earlier in the game, another good bounce gave the Bulldogs a 13-7 lead. On that play, the Bulldogs' Terrence DuPont picked up a botched Lake Forest pitch and ran it in 17 yards. An 8-yard run by Lake Forest's Jeff Scott tied the game 13-13 in the fourth period. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 7-0 early in the first period on a 5-yard run by Snead. Laurel held that lead until early in the third quarter, when Lake Forest pulled even on a 3-yard run by Scott. Scoring Summary ... TEAM 1 2 3 4 TOT.
