NEWARK -- The Sussex Central High School football team's remarkable 1999 season ended with a difficult 13-12 loss to host St. Mark's on Friday, Nov. 19, 1999. The loss in its regular season finale ends Sussex Central's season at 8-2 overall and just shy of qualifying for an at-large berth in the Division I state tournament. A win would have put the Golden Knights in the tournament for the first time. Last week, the Knights lost a chance to automatically qualify for the tournament when they lost to Caesar Rodney in a game for the Henlopen Conference Northern Division championship. St. Mark's, also 8-2, gets the at-large berth by virtue of the points system that determines at-large qualifiers. The Knights controlled the game, outgaining St. Mark's vaunted running game 179-84 on the ground. A long pass, however ,gave them a 12-7 third quarter lead when fullback George Davis beat the Spartan defense to catch a 55-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Hershelman. Davis was stopped less than a yard from the goal-line on the two-point conversion attempt. St. Mark's, however, came back with an 18-yard touchdown run by Louie Wright for a 13-12 lead with 4:35 left in the period. Sussex Central couldn't sustain two drives in the fourth quarter. The first drive ended at the St. Mark's 35 on a tipped pass on fourth down. A second interception by Bart Schindler at midfield stopped the second drive at midfield. The Knights went ahead 6-0 in the second quarter on a two-yard run by Davis to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive.
Second Quarter: 8:37 -- SUSSEX CENTRAL (6-0 SC) 1:25 -- ST. MARK'S (7-6 SM) 9:17 -- SUSSEX CENTRAL (12-7 SC) 4:35 -- ST. MARK'S (13-12 SM)
