The Roadrunners reached the Northeast District National Tournament with a nail-biting 9-8 victory in the Region 19 Division II championship that wasn't secured until the bottom of the ninth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jay Balback tripled home Tyler Brock for the winning score.

Nate Husser got the win in relief for DelTech, which rose to 33-5. Husser also went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and 5 RBI.

Balback, meanwhile, went 3-for-4 with a homer and 4 RBI. Brock went 2-for-4 and was named the tournament MVP.

Region 19 Div. II Tournament
DelTech 12, Mercer (N.J.) 4

The Roadrunners remained unbeaten in the double-elimination Region 19 Division II Tournament behind Tyler Brock and winning pitcher Mark Comolli.

Brock went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and three runs batted in. Jay Balback, Nate Husser and Matt Albano aided Brock with two hits and two RBI apiece.

Comolli threw a five-hitter to record the win. Clark Engle and David Engle had two hits and one RBI apiece.

The Roadrunners, now 32-5, play again on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Brookdale (N.J.) Community College.

Region 19 Div. II Tournament
DelTech 9, Morris (N.J.) 4

The Roadrunners opened play in the double-elimination Region 19 Division II Tournament behind Jay Balback, Keith Brock and winning pitcher Travis Timmons.

Timmons raised his record to 7-1 as the Roadrunners climbed to 31-5 overall.

Balback and Brock both homered while Justin Clark went 2-for-4. Balback, Clark and Derek Haley each drove in two runs.

DelTech 14, Sussex 1

The visiting Roadrunners swept a doubleheader to rise to 25-5.

DelTech trailed 5-1 in the first game before rallying with three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the seventh.

Brian Elder rose to 6-1 with the victory and was backed by Nate Husser, who went 2-for-4 with a run batted in.

In the nightcap, the Roadrunners posted 17 hits including a 4-for-4 performance by Jay Balback. Balback homered, doubled and knocked in two runs.

Pitcher Mark Comolli threw a two-hitter to rise to 5-2.

The Roadrunners took a big early lead but succumbed to a six-run fifth inning by Briarcliffe.

Dave Engle and Jay Balback each hit home runs forDelTech, which slipped to 23-5.

Nate Husser suffered the loss on the mound to drop to 1-1.

DelTech 7, Gloucester 5

The Roadrunners bounced back from the opening game shutout behind Nate Husser's pitching and hitting.

Husser picked up his first win of the season and hit a three-run home run in the nightcap. Jay Balback was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI.

In the opener, the Roadrunners were limited to just three hits. It was the first loss of the season for Travis Timmons, who fell to 3-1.

DelTech is now 14-4.

DelTech 23, Mercer 0

The Roadrunners gained revenge and then some in the nightcap after the first-game loss.

DelTech got a no-hitter from sophomore pitcher Mark Comoli in the second game while blasting away at Mercer pitchers.

Comoli struck out seven and walked just one in a near-perfect performance that raised his record to 2-2.

Roadrunner hitters, meanwhile, obliterated Mercer pitching in the second game with 10 runs in the first inning, five in the second and six in the fifth.

At the plate, Jay Balback went 2-for-3 with a grand slam home run, a double and 7 RBI. Justin Clark added a two-run homer and two doubles to knock in 5 runs, Tyler Brock belted a two-run triple, and Keith Brock knocked in two runs on a double and a single.

In the first game, the Roadrunners led 4-0 through five innings but were stunned by 9 Mercer runs in the sixth.

Balback had a home run and two RBI in the first game.

DelTech is now 13-3.

DelTech 16, Anne Arundel (Md.) 2

The Roadrunners walloped Anne Arundel Community College behind Nate Husser's two home runs including a fifth inning grand slam. Husser finished the game with 7 RBI.

In rising to 12-2, DelTech got five innings of solid work from freshman pitcher Eric Ehrhardt, who allowed only one run on three hits, struck out six and walked four for his first collegiate victory.

DelTech went ahead 4-0 in the first inning on Husser's solo homer, a double by Derek Haley, an RBI-single by David Engle, and a single by Joe Sakewicz.

Husser delivered again in the fourth inning with a two-run double that scored Keith Brock and Jay Balback.

Engle went 4-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Brock and Balback each had RBI triples in the sixth inning.

Husser also relieved Ehrhardt on the mound as he pitched the final two innings. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out three and walked none.

Cecil (Md.) 9, DelTech 7

The Roadrunners split a doubleheader with host Cecil Community College.

Now 11-2, DelTech jumped out to a big lead in the first two innings and belted four home runs for the game including two by Jay Balback.

Balback and David Engle sparked a six-run third inning with a pair of three-run homers. Balback homered again in the fourth inning and Tyler Brock blasted a three-run shot in that inning.

Pitcher Travis Timmons rose to 3-0 with the victory.

In the nightcap, Cecil scored two runs in the fifth inning to break open a 7-7 tie and defeat DelTech pitcher Mark Comoli, who fell to 1-2.

Nate Husser hit a solo home run and Derek Haley hit a three-run homer for the Roadrunners.

The Roadrunners swept a doubleheader in their 2001 home openers.

In Game 1, DelTech jumped ahead 6-0 in the first inning on the strength of a three-run triple by Jay Balback and a two-run homer by David Engle.

The game ended in the fifth inning on the slaughter rule when Nate Husser blasted a solo homer.

Brian Elder remained unbeaten at 3-0 on the mound with three strikeouts and one walk in four innings. He allowed only one hit.

In the second game, pitcher Glenn Phillips, in his first outing, surrendered only one hit in four innings while striking out three and walking one.

That game was also ended by the slaughter rule as the Roadrunners, who pounded out 15 hits, took a 7-0 lead after three innings.

Balback went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Engle added two singles and a pair of RBI. Darryl Chever and Tyler Brock each doubled.
