Sussex Central 5, Indian River 3 The Indians saw their eight-game winning streak snapped when Sussex Central catcher Blake Hershelman belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. IR, which slipped to 8-4 in the Henlopen Conference and 10-6 overall, had just tied the score 3-3 in the sixth inning when Justin Hoban's double scored Josh Dorman. IR got a strong performance early from starting pitcher Billy Clemens, who struck out six in the first four innings. Clemens also singled in Chris Rickwood in the first inning. A double by Russell Hooper in the third scored Rickwood to put IR up 2-0. A throwing error in the fifth inning, however, started a Knight comeback to tie the game 2-2. The Indians fell behind 3-2 before Hoban's double in the sixth. Indian River 6, Smyrna 0 The Indians won their eighth straight game behind Brock Dean's single, double and home run and pitcher Billy Clemens' 12-strikeout, four-hit performance. Clemens rose to 6-0 with the Henlopen Conference triumph. Paul Parsons also homered for IR, which scored four runs in the first two innings. Sussex Tech 8, Indian River 5 The Indians fell behind 7-0 after the first inning and couldn't recover. Josh Dorman, David Hooper and Paul Parsons all belted home runs for IR. Indian River 5, Woodbridge 1 The Indians, behind winning pitcher Billy Clemens, shut down the Blue Raiders. Clemens struck out 8 in a complete-game effort. Keith Dorman doubled and singled and Brock Dean singled twice for IR. Indian River 3, Caravel 1 (8 innings) The Indians bounced back from their season-opening loss with a nonconference upset of the state's 7th-ranked team. Billy Clemens struck out 10 for the victory and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. Clemens also belted a double. The Indians won the game despite collecting only 3 hits to Caravel's 8. IR committed no errors to Caravel's 4. St. Mark's 4, Indian River 1 The Indians dropped their season-opener with the nonconference loss. IR scored its only run in the second inning courtesy of three walks and a balk.
