Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001 Christiana 39, Delmar 31 The Wildcats' remarkable season ended with the first round state tournament loss at Polytech. Rebounding from a three-win season last year, the Wildcats, seeded 21st in the tourney completed their 2000-2001 campaign with an 11-11 mark. Delmar had lost 58 straight games over a three-season span before its three wins last year. Christiana rose to 18-5 and moves into a second-round contest against No. 5 Padua on March 2. Delmar fell behind 13-1 after missing all 10 of their shots in the first quarter and never recovered. Serena Thomas led Delmar with 10 points. Indian River 45, Delmar 38 The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss but finished with a .500 record after winning only three games in 1999-2000. Serena Thomas and Katie Ditme paced the Wildcats with 12 points apiece. Delmar finished at 11-11 overall and 9-10 in the Henlopen Conference and will now await word on a possible state tournament bid. Seaford 74, Delmar 25 The Wildcats couldn't stop the Seaford steamroller and in particular senior guard Cassandra Wright. Wright scored a game-high 29 points on a school-record 9 three-pointers for Seaford. Delmar had three players -- Jamie Hunt, Serena Thomas and Katie Ditmer -- with 6 points apiece. The Wildcats, who trailed 41-14 at halftime, fell to 9-8 in the Henlopen South and 10-10 overall. Smyrna 46, Delmar 41 (2 OT) The Wildcats suffered a tough loss after rallying back from deficits in both halves. Erin Budd led Delmar with 15 points while Serena Thomas contributed 13. The Wildcats trailed 6-2 after the first quarter but bounced back to tie the game 15-15 by halftime. They then scored only 6 points in the third quarter before outscoring Smyrna 15-9 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The two teams managed only two points apiece in that first overtime before Smyrna outscored Delmar 8-3 in the second extra period. Delmar is now 7-8 in the Henlopen South and 9-8 overall. Cape Henlopen 58, Delmar 43 The Wildcats were tied with the heavily favored Vikings but fell behind by 8 points after the third period and never recovered. Serena Thomas scored a game-high 22 points for Delmar, which also got 10 points from Betty Thomas. Indian River 30, Delmar 22 The Wildcats were shut out in the fourth quarter of a Henlopen South contest that was tied 22-22 after three quarters. Betty Thomas and Serena Thomas scored 9 and 8 points, respectively. Seaford 40, Delmar 27 The Wildcats trailed the unbeaten Blue Jays by only four points entering the fourth quarter but were outscored 14-5 in the final period to fall to 2-3. Junior forward Tonya Duncan paced Delmar with 11 points. Lake Forest 41, Laurel 37 The Wildcats had a two-point lead late in the game but saw Lake Forest score the contest's final six points to take the Henlopen South contest. Tracy Lloyd scored 9 points and Tonya Duncan 8 for Delmar. Smyrna 53, Delmar 40 The Wildcats led 14-8 after the first period but were outscored 32-16 over the next two periods in the Henlopen South game. Serena Thomas had 10 points for Delmar. Delmar 40, Laurel 24 The Wildcats outscored their rivals 12-1 in the third period to break open what had been a 14-13 game at halftime. Betty Thomas scored a game-high 14 points for the Wildcats in the season- and Henlopen Conference Southern Division opener. Serena Thomas added 9 more points. The game was the first in Delmar's new gymnasium. |
