Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001 Tower Hill 42, Indian River 32 The Indians were eliminated from the state tournament by the 13th-seeded Hillers in a first round game at Polytech. Indian River, the 20th seed, was led by Natalie Parsons' 16 points and Dayna Elliott's 7 points. They concluded their season with a 12-11 overall record. Tower Hill moves on to a second round game against defending state champion St. Mark's at A.I. DuPont on March 2. The Indians fell behind 28-15 at halftime but cut the Hillers' lead to four points, at 32-28, after switching to a man-to-man from a zone in the third period. The Hillers, though, outscored IR 8-2 with 8 straight free throws to bump the lead back up to 10 points. Tower Hill was led by 16 points from Jill Hocutt and 11 from Kelly Hocutt.

The victory finished IR's regular season at 12-10 overall. They went 10-9 in the conference. IR now awaits word on whether it will be accepted into the 24-team state tourney, which begins Feb. 28. Natalie Parsons and Brittany Croll sparked the win over Delmar with 13 points apiece. Indian River 37, Dover 31 The Indians rose to 11-9 with an important win in their bid for a state tournament berth. Brittany Croll scored a game-high 15 points and was assisted by Natalie Parsons, who pumped in 12 points. IR trailed 22-20 at halftime but scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. Seaford 60, Indian River 27 The Indians lost the game in the second quarter when they were outscored by the Blue Jays, 23-2, in the second period. Brittany Croll scored 19 points for IR, which has lost to Seaford twice this season. Indian River fell to 7-8 in the division and 9-8 overall.
Indian River 54, Lake Forest 27 Photo: Indian River's Brittany Croll Indian River rolled to the Henlopen South victory behind the career-high 30-point offensive explosion by forward Brittany Croll. In rising to 7-7 in the South and 9-8 overall, the Indians took a 27-17 halftime lead and put the game out of reach with a 10-2 advantage in the third period. Croll scored her points on 12 field goals and 6 of 11 foul shooting. Emily Lyons and Natalie Parsons contributed 8 and 6 points, respectively. Sussex Central 42, Indian River 34 The Indians suffered a loss to their district rivals. Brittany Croll led IR with 13 points.

Cape won the game on a pair of free throws by Toni Jones with seven seconds remaining in the extra period. Emily Lyons led Indian River with 20 points. Natalie Parsons and Brittany Croll contributed 12 points apiece. IR led by three points late in regulation but a three-pointer by Cape with 30 seconds left forced the extra period. Polytech 49, Indian River 30 The Indians fell behind 27-12 at halftime and never recovered in falling to 6-3 in the Southern Division and 8-4 overall. Dayna Elliott was the only Indian in double figures against the 10th-ranked Panthers with 11 points. Polytech rose to 9-2 overall.

Natalie Parsons and Crystal Bell sparked the victory with 11 points apiece. Indian River is now 6-2 in the South and 8-3 overall. The Indians remain a game behind Seaford in the South standings. Indian River 30, Delmar 22 The Indians suffered a major blow to their chances for repeating as Henlopen South champions. At 5-2 in the division and 7-3 overall, IR fell 2 1/2 games behind division-leading Seaford. Natalie Parsons, with 16 points, was the only Indian in double figures. Indian River was outscored 17-2 in the first quarter and couldn't catch up.

Dayna Elliott sparked the win with 12 points and four steals. She shot 6 of 6 from the foul line. Natalie Parsons added 7 points for Indian River, which rose to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the division.

Dayna Elliott added 12 more points in the title game. With the win, Indian River rose to 6-2 overall. Indian River 53, Mardela (Md.) 44 The Indians rose to 5-2 overall and reached the championship game of the annual Mardela Tournament with the nonconference win. Emily Lyons and Natalie Parsons scored 14 points apiece to spark the Indians. Brittany Croll scored 13 more points for Indian River, which led 25-18 at halftime.

Natalie Parsons led the Indians in scoring for the second straight game with 14 points. She was 6-for-6 from the foul line. Brittany Croll added 13 points for IR, which rose to 4-1 in the division and 4-2 overall. Indian River 68, Woodbridge 15 The Indians rebounded from their loss to Seaford with a resounding win over winless Woodbridge. Natalie Parsons scored 19 points and Emily Lyons added 14 more as the Indians rose to 3-1 in the Henlopen South and overall to remain a game behind Seaford in the division standings. Ashley Taylor added 9 points for the Indians, while Brittany Croll and Dayna Elliott added 8 points apiece. Indian River 34, Lake Forest 23 The Indians remained unbeaten in the Henlopen Conference Southern Division behind Brittany Croll's game-high 15 points. The Indians, the defending division champions, are now 2-0 in the South and 2-0 overall. Indian River 30, Smyrna 26 The Indians began the defense of their Henlopen Conference Southern Division crown with the season-opening victory. Dayna Elliott scored 10 points and Brittany Croll 9 more to spark I.R. The Indians, who scored only 4 points in the first quarter, led by one point entering the final period. |
