The annual Milford Invitational high school wrestling tournament kicks off the 2000-2001 season Friday, Dec. 8, when 14 teams do battle in the season's first meet.
The tournament begins Friday at 4 p.m. in the Milford High School gymnasium. Quarterfinals are Saturday at 10 a.m. and the finals are Saturday at 6 p.m.
Sussex Central will be one of five teams in the tournament that competed in last year's state dual meet championships. Indian River, Milford and Sussex Tech will be the other Sussex County teams competing.
Caesar Rodney and Smyrna from the Henlopen Conference and William Penn and Hodgson from the Blue Hen Conference are the other returning state dual meet teams in the tourney.
Brandywine, Delcastle, Dover, Lake Forest, Polytech and Nansemond River (Va.) round out the field.
Among the top wrestlers in the tournament will be Sussex Central's Corey Strohmeyer, Teddy Thompson and Jake Booth. Strohmeyer reached the state finals last year while Booth and Thompson both finished third at states. Thompson won the state championship as a sophomore.
Indian River's Quinn Revel placed fourth at states in the 112-pound class last year, while teammate Ty Nock placed fifth at 103.
The tournament also features several nationally ranked wrestlers.
Caesar Rodney's Chris Parker is ranked 14th among seniors in the nation at 103, Hodgson's Mike Welch is ranked 8th among seniors and 17th among all classes at 130, Hodgson's Jordan Sianni is 7th among juniors and 13th among all classes at 112, .
Sussex Central's Thompson and Booth and CR's Zack Kopp have received special mention rankings at 145, 189 and 152, respectively.
