103 Milford Crown Indian River's Will Saylor was the only Sussex County wrestler to bring home a championship trophy in the annual Milford Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 9. The 103-pounder major decisioned Caesar Rodney's Jon Hummel, 15-3, to claim his title at Milford High School in one of the most prestigious early-season tournaments in the state. Saylor won by pin in the quarterfinals and semifinals en route to the finals. Caesar Rodney, meanwhile, again looks like the team to beat in the Henlopen Conference as the Riders won six individual titles and put 8 wrestlers overall in the finals. Saylor was joined in the finals by teammates Tyrice Nocks and Luis Perez as the Indians advanced the most wrestlers of the five Sussex County teams in the tournament into the championship round. Nocks was major decisioned by Hodgson's Jordan Sianni 17-3 in the 125 final, while Perez was major decisioned 17-8 in the 152 final by Caesar Rodneys' Zack Kopp. Milford led Sussex County teams by placing five wrestlers in Saturday's semifinals but the Bucs were able to advance only one wrestler -- 189-pounder K.J. Kendzierski -- into the finals. Kendzierski was pinned in the finals by Caesar Rodney's Tony Harris. Other Sussex wrestlers to reach the finals were Seaford's Cameron Fitzgerald at 135 and Hilbert Smith at 215 and Sussex Central's Casey Strohmeyer. Fitzgerald was major decisioned, 12-0, by Hodgson's Mike Welch, Smith was pinned by Hodgson's Joe Cylc, and Strohmeyer was edged by William Penn's James Fromal, 7-6. Sussex Central's Corey Strohmeyer, a state finalist last year at 130, lost in the 135 quarterfinals but rebounded to finish third with a 6-0 decision over Brandywine's Jason Scott in the third-place match. Strohmeyer teammates Jordan Lowe, Tyler Dickerson and Erik Hopkins also captured their third-place matches. Lowe decisioned Milford's Dan Madanat 5-0 at 140, Dickerson scored a 15-4 major decision over Lake Forest's Mike Gleeson at 160, and Hopkins decisioned William Penn's Kevin Burnett 3-2 at 171. Central's Jake Booth and Teddy Thompson, both third-place finishers in last year's state tournament, did not wrestler as they continue to work into wrestling shape following the Knights' footbal season, which just ended last weekend. Milford's Justin Zook (145) and Seaford's Dan Lloyd (189) lost their third-place matches.
