 The Delaware state high school wrestling tournament at Delaware State University was delayed a day by Thursday's snowfall, which cancelled school throughout the state on Friday.
The tournament will now begin with preliminaries and quarterfinals on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, and conclude with semifinals, fifth-place, third-place and championship finals matches on Sunday, Feb. 25.
Preliminaries start Saturday at 11 a.m. with quarterfinals and consolations at about 3 p.m.
The semifinals and more consolations start Sunday at 11 a.m. Fifth- and third-place matches begin Sunday at 4 p.m. with the championship finals beginning at about 5:45 p.m.
Will Saylor of Indian River High School is the lone Sussex County wrestlers to garner a top seed in the annual Delaware state high school wrestling tournament at Delaware State University Feb. 23-24.
Saylor, a freshman 103-pounder for the Indians, is 31-4 after sweeping to the Henlopen Conference title last weekend at Milford High School.
There are no defending state champions from Sussex County, but Sussex Central's 152-pounder, Teddy Thompson, will try to recapture a state title he won in 1999 but lost in 2000. He placed third last year at 145 after winning the 145 state title in 1999.
Returning medalists from last year's state tourney include:
- Sussex Central 130-pounder Corey Strohmeyer (runnerup at 130 last year)
- Seaford 135-pounder Cameron Fitzgerald (third at 125 last year)
- Laurel 171-pounder Adam Ralph (runnerup at 135 last year)
- Sussex Central's Jake Booth (third at 189 last year)
Indian River's Quinn Revel will try to improve on last year's fourth-place finish at 112. The 130-pounder lost to Strohmeyer in last weekend's Henlopen Conference finals.
Saylor, Strohmeyer, Fitzgerald and Sussex Central's Raheim Brunskill (152) all won conference championships last weekend.
