Wrestling Tournament |
Into State Mat Semifinals Several Sussex County wrestlers, including 103-pound top seed Will Saylor of Indian River, advanced into the semifinals of the Delaware high school state wrestling tournament with quarterfinal victories on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001. The tournament, delayed a day when Thursday's snowfall postponed the original Friday start of the event, resumes today with semifials at 11 a.m. Consolation rounds will follow that throughout the afternoon. Fifth- and third-place matches will begin at 4 p.m. with the Parade of Champions at 5:30 and the championship finals at about 5:45 p.m. Besides Saylor, other Sussex County wrestlers to advance to today's semifinals included Sussex Central's Corey and Casey Strohmeyer at 130 and 140, respectively, Milford's J.R. Duffy and Laurel's Adam Ralph at 171, and Sussex Central's Jake Booth and Milford's Keith Kendzierski at 189. Saylor breezed into his semifinal with a 15-0 major decision in the preliminaries and a 47-second pin in the quarterfinals. Sussex Central's Teddy Thompson, a state champion in 1999 and a third-place finisher last year at 145, lost his preliminary match to Hodgson's Mark Boulden and will try to wrestle back to a third-place finish today. Sussex County Online will provide complete coverage of Sussex County wrestlers' fifth-place, third-place and championship matches, with online audio and video of the championship matches, on Monday. |
