Delaware State Tournament Polytech 66, Cape Henlopen 40 The third time was no charm for the 11th-seeded Vikings as their season ended with the second round loss to the 6th-seeded Panthers. Cape ended its season with a 15-9 mark. Polytech, led by Tyresa Smith's 18 points, rose to 19-4 and moved into the tournament quarterfinals for the first time in the program's history. Cape fell behind 36-20 at halftime and never seriously challenged the Panthers, who beat them twice during the regular season. Andrea Carey paced Cape with 14 points, while Toni Jones added 12. Delaware State Tournament Cape Henlopen 54, Mt. Pleasant 48 The 11th-seeded Vikings, behind freshman point guard Anika Jones' clutch free throw shooting in the final minute, advanced to the second round of the 2002 Delaware girls' state tournament. Jones hit four foul shots in the last 30 seconds to help the Vikings hold off No. 22 Mt. Pleasant and move into a second round game at No. 6 Polytech on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. Now 15-8 overall, the Vikings led from the start against Mt. Pleasant and held a 24-16 halftime lead. Cape still led by seven points after three quarters, but the Green Knights mounted a comeback to pull within 50-46 with 40 seconds left. A pair of free throws brought the Knights to within 50-48 with just 27 seconds left. But then Jones took over, as she hit her four foul shots to ice the victory. Her sister, junior Toni Jones, led the Vikings with 19 points, including 9 straight in the third quarter. Mt. Pleasant's season ended at 11-11. Caesar Rodney 65, Cape Henlopen 58 The Vikings put up a major fight in their regular season finale against the Henlopen Conference Northern Division leaders. With Andrea Carey scoring 10 points to post her 1,000th career point, the Vikings stayed close to the Riders throughout. Toni Jones sparked Cape with 26 points, while Lindsey Williams added 12 more. The loss concluded Cape's regular season at 14-5 in the conference and 16-6 overall. Cape Henlopen 75, Sussex Central 30 The Vikings breezed to another Henlopen Conference win to rise to 14-4 in the conference and 16-5 overall. Guard Toni Jones led the way with 27 points, while teammate Andrea Carey contributed 19 more. Lindsey Williams added 13. Cape jumped out to a 36-13 halftime lead over Sussex Central and never looked back. Cape Henlopen 70, Sussex Tech 41 The Vikings rolled to their second consecutive Henlopen Conference win after bolting to a 46-17 halftime lead. Cape was led by 16 points apiece from Toni Jones and Andrea Carey as it rose to 13-4 in the conference and 15-5 overall. Lindsey Williams scored 15 more points for Cape, while Lisa Williams hit a pair of three-pointers on the way to 8 points. Cape Henlopen 68, Smyrna 50 The Vikings won a key Henlopen Conference game when they knocked off the Southern Division's second-place team to rise to 12-4 in the conference and 14-5 overall. The loss eliminated Smyrna from the South race and gave the title to Seaford.. Cape took command in the second quarter with a 20-11 edge and then put the game away in the third with a 19-11 edge. Toni Jones and Lindsey Williams paced the Vikings with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Andrea Carey added 17 more. Polytech 56, Cape Henlopen 34 The Vikings couldn't keep up with the Henlopen Conference Northern Division leaders as they fell to 11-4 in the conference and 13-5 overall. Lindsey Williams' 15 points paced the Vikings. Toni Jones added 9. Polytech put the game away with a 14-4 edge in the third quarter. Cape Henlopen 58, Milford 33 The Vikings posted their second straight Henlopen Conference triumph behind Toni Jones' 19 points. The Vikings broke the game open in the third period with a 23-9 advantage that turned a 23-18 halftime lead into a 46-27 lead over Milford entering the fourth quarter. Anika Jones contributed 16 more points and Andrea Carey chipped in with 10. Cape is now 11-3 in the conference and 13-4 overall. Cape Henlopen 71, Lake Forest 21 The Vikings snapped their two-game losing streak with a big Henlopen Conference victory. Cape roared to a 37-8 halftime lead and never let up. Anika Jones and Aisha Holloman paced the Vikings with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Toni Jones added 12 points and Lindsey Williams contributed 10. St. Mark's 73, Cape Henlopen 31 The Vikings dropped the nonconference game after scoring only 7 points in the first half. Toni Jones was the only Viking in double figures with 12 points. Seaford 59, Cape Henlopen 37 The Vikings led the Henlopen Conference Southern Division leaders early but gradually gave way after the first period. Cape led Seaford 9-6 after the first quarter but was outscored 16-6 in the second period and never recovered. Toni Jones paced the Vikings with a game-high 19 points. Anika Jones contributed 8 more. Cape Henlopen 91, Woodbridge 16 The Vikings rolled to the Henlopen Conference win over Woodbridge behind Lindsey Williams and Toni Jones. Williams scored 22 points and Jones added 18. Cape Henlopen 61, Indian River 54 Cape got 31 points from Toni Jones and rebounded from a slow first quarter as the Vikings won the Henlopen Conference triumph in the fourth quarter. The Vikings were outscored 14-3 in the first period by Indian River but came back in the second period with 24 points to take a one-point lead at halftime. Tied 44-44 after three quarters, the Vikings finally took control in the fourth period. Jones hit 3 of Cape's 5 three-pointers. Aishia Holloman contributed 11 points while Lindsey Williams sank two more three-pointers on the way to 9 points. Cape Henlopen 62, Laurel 57 The Vikings slowly built a lead after three quarters and held on in the fourth period in the Henlopen Conference triumph. Cape led Laurel 50-43 after three quarters. The Vikings were led Toni Jones' 25 points and Andrea Carey's 13 points. Caravel 62, Cape Henlopen 46 The Vikings dropped the nonconference game as their two-game winning streak was snapped. Andrea Carey sparked Cape with 13 points, while Toni Jones and Lindsey Williams contributed 10 points apiece. Caravel put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 16-6 advantage. The Vikings dropped to 6-4 overall with the loss. Cape Henlopen 50, Dover 42 The Vikings used a big third quarter to take the Henlopen Conference triumph -- their second straight win. Cape outscored Delmar 16-7 in the third quarter to overcome a 29-24 halftime deficit. Guard Toni Jones poured in 21 points to spark the Vikings, who rose to 6-2 in the conference and 6-3 overall. Andrea Carey added 16 more points. Jones and Carey both sank three-pointers. Cape Henlopen 60, Dover 55 The Vikings rose to 5-2 in the conference and 5-3 overall behind Lindsey Williams' game-high 21 points. Cape took a 22-12 lead after the first period but led only 31-30 at halftime. The Vikings then held off the Senators in the second half as the bombed away for 7 three-pointers in the game. Andrea Carey scored 17 points and Toni Jones contributed 14 more to the win. Williams and Carey both drained a pair of three-pointers. Caesar Rodney 86, Cape Henlopen 63 Cape guard Toni Jones scored her 1,000th career point with a 25-point outing to take some of the sting out of the loss. In dropping to 4-2 in the Henlopen Conference and 4-3 overall, the Vikings were outscored 28-12 in the first period by the Northern Division power. Anika Jones and Lindsey Williams scored 10 points apiece for Cape. Cape Henlopen 54, Sussex Central 31 The Vikings posted their third straight victory with the Henlopen Conference win. Cape dominated from the start as it took a 16-5 lead over Sussex Central after one quarter. The Vikings were led by guard Toni Jones' 17 points and 15 points by Lindsey Williams. Forward Aishia Holloman contributed 10 points. Cape is now 4-1 in the conference and 4-2 overall. Cape Henlopen 50, Sussex Tech 43 The Vikings won their second straight with a Henlopen Conference Northern Division triumph. Junior guard Toni Jones led the Vikings with 22 points. In rising to 3-1 in the conference and 3-2 overall, Cape broke open a close game at halftime with a 14-6 third period advantage that gave it a 40-29 edge over Sussex Tech heading into the fourth quarter. Lindsey Williams scored 6 points on a pair of three-pointers. Cape Henlopen 60, Dover 55 The Vikings snapped a two-game losing streak with the Henlopen Conference triumph. Guard Toni Jones poured in a game-high 25 points including a three-pointer to spark the victory. Lindsey Williams added 13 more as Cape rose to 2-1 in the conference and 2-2 overall. Andrea Carey added 8 points and hit a pair of three-pointers. Cape trailed 25-23 at halftime but came back in the second half. A.I. DuPont 79, Cape Henlopen 59 The Vikings dropped their second straight with the nonconference loss. Cape led the game 52-50 entering the fourth quarter but was outscored 29-7 in that period. Toni Jones led three Vikings in double figures with 20 points including one of Cape's four three-pointers. Andrea Carey contributed 12 points and Lisa Williams dropped in 11. Both hit three-pointers. Polytech 63, Cape Henlopen 48 The Vikings dropped a key Henlopen Conference Northern Division game despite leading at halftime. Cape took a 28-27 lead itno the break but Polytech took a one-point lead after three quarters before putting the game away with a 21-7 advantage in the fourth period including a 20-5 run. Toni Jones led Cape with 18 points. She hit four three-pointers. Lindsey Williams scored 14 more points and sank a three-pointer. Cape Henlopen 64, Milford 42 The Vikings started their Henlopen Conference season with a big win sparked by Toni Jones' 30 points.
