The 2001-2002 high school boys' basketball season started slowly for Milford Friday night at Cape Henlopen -- very slowly.
But the Bucs overcame their season-opening doldrums to give Cape a run for its money in a Henlopen Conference contest.
Before the Bucs knew what hit them Friday night, they were behind 16-0 and seemingly on the way to a scoreless first quarter.
But swingman Jonathan Webb got the Bucs on track with a three-pointer for the Bucs' first points with 2:14 left in the period, and playing scrappy pressure defense, the Bucs outscored Cape from then on.
In fact, from the time they fell behind 16-0, Milford actually outscored Cape 52-43.
Forward Tomaz Davis sparked a late-game charge that would eventually bring Milford to within 6 points with less than a minute left.
Davis had actually given the Bucs a chance with 2:01 remaining in the game when he converted a steal into a fast break layup and foul shot for a three-point play to cut Cape's lead to 55-47.
The Vikings, however, held the Bucs off from there.
"We played with great composure and defensive intensity after falling behind early," said Milford head coach Sam Williams. "I am very proud of our players' effort and dedication. We came back and made a game of it."
Davis led Milford with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals. Webb added 18 more points and sank two three-pointers, including a 35-footer that bounced off the rim, off the backboard and through the net as time ran out in the first half. Webb also had 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
Brent Williams collected 2 steals.
The Bucs hurt themselves at the free throw line, where they went only 8-for-21.
