Forfeits ultimately led to the Blue Raiders' defeat in their season-opening dual meet. Woodbridge surrendered six forfeits, including a forfeit at heavyweight, to give Delmar the Henlopen Conference victory. In the eight matches that were actually contested, Woodbridge won seven. Four forfeits put Woodbridge in a 24-6 hole after the 130 match with the Raiders' Herve Etienne recording a 41-second pin at 112 in the only match contested in the first four bouts. The Raiders then began to come back, however, with pins by Richard Hall at 135, Ricky Hughes at 140 and Richard Idler at 145 and a technical fall by Andre Cannon at 152 for a 29-24 lead. Another forfeit gave Delmar a 30-29 lead, but Woodbridge responded with pins by R.C. Russell at 171 and James Faulkner at 189 to go up 41-30. Delmar then picked up the pin it needed at 215, which, combined with a forfeit in the heavyweight match, gave it the points it needed to pull out the win. "It was a tough loss," said Woodbridge head coach Tyrone Gray. "Forfeits hurt us." Woodbridge Index | Sports Index |
