Girls' Semifinals The Seaford High School girls' basketball team came up short in its bid to be the first Sussex County team in 30 years to win a state championship when it lost to Polytech 57-46 in the 2003 Delaware girls' state title game on Saturday, March 8, at the University of Delaware's Bob Carpenter Center. The victory by Polytech, though, gave the Henlopen Conference its first girls' state basketball title since Cape Henlopen won the very first state championship game in 1973. Seaford had beaten Sussex Tech in the semifinals on Wednesday, March 5. Tech, seeded fifth, finished its season with a 21-3 record as its 17-game winning streak was ended. Besides the unprecedented appearance of two Sussex County programs in the Final Four, Polytech's apppearance in the semifinals marked the first time in tournament history that three Henlopen Conference squads had reached the girls' Final Four. No Sussex girls' team has won a state title since the 1973 Cape Henlopen squad coached by Bob Cassady won the first state tournament 30 years ago. Sussex Central lost to Ursuline in the 1995 finals. Delmar was the only other Sussex County team to qualify for this year's state tournament. The Wildcats, seeded 24th in the 24-team field, concluded their season with a 55-48 loss to Glasgow to finish with an 11-11 record. Following are schedules and results for the girls' tournament.
