DuPont in last year's tournament semis. Semifinal winners advance to the state championship game at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, at the Carpenter Center. At the time, CR led 41-38 with 6:44 remaining in the game. Ebony Keaton put back a miss and was fouled for a potential three-point play, but when she missed the free throw, the Jays rebounded and got the ball to Tingle, who sank one of the Jays' five three-pointers for a 43-41 Seaford advantage. Following a Rider miss, the Jays came back down the court and got the ball to Burbage, who hit her three-pointers to put Seaford up for good at 46-41 with 5:55 remaining in the game. For the game, Keaton scored 19 points, including 11 in the fourth period. Roniece Williams added 18 points. Tingle finished with 9 points including a pair of threes. The fourth quarter rally enabled the Jays to overcome a 6-point first quarter. Seaford led 20-19 at halftime but trailed 37-36 going into the final period. In rising to 10-1 overall, the Jays outscored Polytech 16-7 in the third quarter and 18-12 in the fourth period to overcome a one-point halftime deficit. The Jays did their damage from outside as they nailed 11 three-pointers, with guard Shirelle Tingle sinking 5 and forward Tonya Purnell dropping 3. Guard Ashlee Burbage hit two of the others. Caesar Rodney 57, Seaford 52 As has become their custom, the Blue Jays suffered another regular season loss to rival Caesar Rodney that could prove more damaging to the Jays' Henlopen Conference championship hopes that past losses. Seaford drained 6 three-pointers in the game and led 34-26 at halftime, but a poor third quarter doomed the Jays in the Northern Division defeat. CR erupted for an 18-7 advantage in that third period to enter the fourth quarter ahead 44-41. Forward Roniece Williams led Seaford with 19 points, while forward Tonya Purnell and guard Ashlee Burbage contributed 8 points apiece. Purnell sank two of the Jays' three-pointers. Seaford has lost to CR during the regular season in each of the last two years but has turned around and beaten the Riders in the Henlopen Conference championship game and the state tournament. The loss could prevent Seaford from reaching the conference championship game this year since it has moved into the Northern Division with CR and Polytech. The Blue Jays and Riders will hook up again on Feb. 11, 2003, but that will be a nonconference contest. Seaford is now 1-1 in the conference and 3-1 overall. Now 3-0 overall, the Blue Jays visit Caesar Rodney in a key Henlopen North game. Seaford and CR have developed quite a rivalry in recent years, with CR winning the regular season matchup only to be beaten by Seaford in the conference championship game. With Seaford moving to the Henlopen North from the South this season, the two teams won't meet in the conference title game, giving this game all the more importance for bragging rights. Seaford beat CR 48-41 for last year's title and then scored a 63-47 win over CR in the state quarterfinals. Seaford also defeated CR 54-32 in the 2000 conference championship game. Championship Game Seaford 58, A.I. DuPont 48 The Blue Jays avenged their state tournament semifinal loss of a year ago by beating A.I. DuPont in its own tournament to capture the Tiger Tip-Off Classic at A.I. DuPont. Seaford lost to A.I. 53-40 in the 2001 state semifinals to end a 23-3 season. Senior guard Ashlee Burbage scored 14 points for the Blue Jays to go with Ebony Keaton's 19 points. Burbage sank 4 three-pointers, including a half-court shot at the buzzer to end the third quarter. That shot broke open a two-point game and gave Seaford a 41-36 advantage heading into the final period after trailing 26-22 at halftime. Burbage was named the tournament's most valuable player. Keaton also put a stake in the Tigers' hearts as she hit two straight layups midway through the fourth quarter to give the Blue Jays a 49-38 lead. Forward Roniece Williams contributed 11 points including a pair of three-pointers, while 6-0 freshman center Angie Owens scored 8 points. Now 2-0 overall, the Blue Jays visit Dover in their Henlopen Conference Northern Division opener on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. It will be Seaford's first game in the Henlopen North after many years in the Southern Division.
