LEWES -- For the longest time, it looked like the Cape Henlopen High School boys' basketball team would be able to hang in there with the bigger, stronger and faster Atlantic City Vikings in the Slam Dunk to the Beach National Holiday Basketball Tournament.
Then, BOOM! Atlantic City ripped off 20 consecutive points in less than 5 minutes and was well on its way to a 76-58 victory in the opening round of the Mayor's Cup on Monday, Dec. 26, 1999. The run, led by Atlantic City's Tony Cavalieri, Lawrence Triniwell and Quashan Bailey, ended Cape's hopes and dropped the Vikings to 2-4 overall. Cape trailed by double digits on two earlier occasions but had been able to come back behind J.J. Hazzard, Darrell Davis and Pat Woods. After the 20-0 run, though, there were no comebacks left in the Vikings, who got a 40-minute lecture from head coach Ed Waples after the game. Davis scored 18 points to lead the Vikings. Hazzard scored 13 points but didn't get his first points until the second quarter. Normally a ferocious rebounder, Hazzard had a difficult time coping with Atlantic City's big, strong front line and ended the game with only 6 rebounds. Woods was Cape's most consistent player with 13 points and 5 steals, but his 6 assists were offset by 6 turnovers against the withering Atlantic City press. Down 33-29 at halftime, Cape stayed close early in the third quarter until Atlantic City went on a 6-0 run to open a 48-38 lead before Waples called time with 4:36 left in the period. After the timeout, Cape responded with a layup by Woods, a layup by Anthony Mann on a nice pass from Hazzard, and a jumper in the lane by Davis. But just as it looked like Cape was getting back into contention, Atlantic City got a three-point play from Triniwell, a three-pointer by Cavalieri, and layups by Triniwell and Bailey to forge a 58-44 lead after three periods. The onslaught continued in the fourth quarter as Triniwell hit a layup and three-pointer, Cavalieri connected on a three-pointer, and Bailey followed in a missed shot. And just like that, Atlantic City was up 68-44 with 5:22 left in the game. Triniwell finished with 23 points and 4 steals. Cavalieri had 19 points, 7 assists and 5 steals but committed 8 of the 18 Atlantic City turnovers that allowed Cape to stay in the game as long as it did. Bailey and Brandon White each scored 10 points and Bailey added 3 steals. Cape fell behind by double digits right off the bat as Atlantic City flew up and down the floor for fast break points. By the time the dust settled, Cape trailed 16-6 with two minutes left in the first quarter. A brief flurry at the end of the first period, though, brought Cape back into the game as Tom Sheehan hit a baseline jumper, Pat Woods turned a layup and foul into a three-point play, and Sheehan closed the quarter with a fast break layup that cut the deficit to 17-13. The Vikings pulled within 19-17 early in the second period on a pair of foul shots by Hazzard -- his first two points of the game. After a three-pointer by AC's Lawrence Triniwell, Hazzard then hit his first field goals of the day on a floater in the lane and a jumper to pull the Vikings within 22-21 with 4:14 to go before halftime. Atlantic City coach Richard Morris called timeout at that point and his Vikings responded with 6-0 run on a pair of baskets by Triniwell and a sweet reverse layup by Cavalieri for a 28-21 advantage. Cape then outscored AC 8-3 the rest of the way as Cavalieri went to the bench with his third personal foul to account for their 33-29 deficit.

Waples on Point Guard Pat Woods Cape Henlopen coach Ed Waples on the loss: "We did a good job ... at least the first half I wasn't too upset. We were there in the first half. Then we fell back in the second half and that's been the story of our lives recently. We play well in the first half and then get to the second half and third or fourth quarter and we seem to fall apart. I told the guys in the locker room that at times we look great. We can be great one minute but then the next minute we look like the worst team on earth. It's our consistency that we've got to work on. Our problem is that we can't do it (play well) consistently." Waples on his team at this point in the season: "This is a good group of guys I've got. We've just got to get it together in the final part of the game. I told them today I want them to get together and do some running and work on their air and lungs and stuff. Maybe that's one of the problems (with the second half collapses)." Waples on using Anthony Mann for meaningful minutes for the first time: "We've been working on some things with some new guys. We have no choice but to try to figure out something for these fourth quarter blues. We need someone to step up. We gave Mann a shot at it today and he did a good job."

Down just four points with two minutes left in the third quarter and on a 6-0 run after surviving a couple of earlier onslaughts by the lightning quick AC squad, Cape appeared to be in its Slam Dunk to the Beach Mayor's Cup opener for the long haul.
