State Tournament 2nd Round
Friends 45, Cape Henlopen 44
The Vikings' season ended with a heart-breaker as standout senior guard Darrell Davis missed two foul shots with 2.8 seconds left.
Davis led Cape with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists and helped the Vikings rally from a 10-point deficit in the third period to take a 5-point lead, 42-37, midway through the quarter.
Over the next three minutes, neither team scored, with Cape missing 3 three-point attempts. Then, Cape committed four straight turnovers to allow Friends to regain the lead, 43-42, with 1:21 left. Friends went up 45-42 on a put-back of a missed free throw with 26 seconds left.
A layup by Bobby Croce then pulled Cape within 45-44 to set up the game's frantic final seconds.
Cape finished the season with a 17-7 record. Friends advanced to the quarterfinals with an 18-5 mark.
State Tournament 1st Round
Cape Henlopen 63, Concord 53
The Vikings won their seventh straigh to advance to a second round game against Wilmington Friends on Saturday, March 4, at 4 p.m. at Polytech.
Point guard Pat Woods sparked a balanced Cape attack with 18 points. Bobby Croce and Julius Hazzard scored 13 points apiece and Darrell Davis added 12 more. Woods also hit 2 three-pointers.
Cape rose to 17-6 overall by opening up a 25-17 lead at halftime and never allowing Concord to gain any momentum after that.
The Vikings helped themselves by hitting 16 of their 21 free throws while Concord made only 11 of its 25 foul shots.
Cape Henlopen 53, St. Mark's 43
The Vikings outscored St. Mark's 13-3 in the second period to take the game over. Darrell Davis scored 15 points to lead Cape. Bob Croce scored 11 points and Tom Sheehan contributed 10 more.
Cape Henlopen 56, Dover 45
Cape took control of the game in the third period behind the shooting of Darrell Davis and Tim Widdoes to rise to 14-4 in the Henlopen North and 14-6 overall. Davis scored 24 points and hit 2 three-pointers while Widdoes scored 15 points including 3 three-pointers. The Vikings broke the game open by outscoring Dover 19-10 in the third period.
Cape Henlopen 73, Caesar Rodney 50
Cape cemented its hold on second place in the Henlopen North by ending CR's 8-game winning streak. The Vikings rose to 13-4 in the North and 13-6 overall to lead CR by two games for second place behind Sussex Tech.
Cape Henlopen 55, Lake Forest 43
The Vikings finished the game with a 21-9 run to break open a 34-34 tie in a game with the leaders of the Henlopen South. Darrell Davis scored 23 points for Cape while Julius Hazzard added 9.
Cape Henlopen 57, Sussex Central 54
The Vikings used 13 points by point guard Patrick Woods and 12 more by guard Darrell Davis to get past rival Sussex Central. Bobby Croce added 11 points for Cape, which took a 16-point lead but had to hold off Central in the fourth period to rise to 11-4 in the Henlopen North and 11-6 overall.

Cape Henlopen 55, Polytech 47
The Vikings rose to 10-3 in the Henlopen North and 10-5 overall with a big third quarter. Cape outscored Smyrna 18-9 in the third quarter. Julius Hazzard led the Vikings with 15 points and Darrell Davis added 12.
Cape Henlopen 52, Polytech 47
The Vikings lost a heart-breaker at the buzzer on a three-pointer by Milford's Jonathan Webb to fall to 9-3 in the Henlopen North and 9-5 overall. Cape guard Darrell Davis tied the game 52-52 with a three-pointer with 20 seconds left before Webb's game-winner. Davis finished with 27 points. He scored 12 of the Vikings' 16 points in the final period.
Cape Henlopen 52, Polytech 47
The Vikings remained solidly in second place in the Henlopen North at 9-2 in the division and 9-4 overall. Cape took an 18-10 lead after the first period and held on from there. Darrell Davis scored a game-high 19 points for Cape while forward Julius Hazzard added 11.
Cape Henlopen 78, Seaford 71
The Vikings held off the Blue Jays behind Julius Hazzard and Darrell Davis. Hazzard and Davis scored 24 points apiece and with Bobby Croce's 17 points combined for 65 of the Vikings' points. Cape took control of the game with a 25-15 advantage in the second quarter.
Cape Henlopen 57, Indian River 53
The Vikings survived a tough battle with their traditional rivals to rise to 7-2 in the Henlopen North and 7-4 overall. Julius Hazzard led Cape with 21 points while guard Darrell Davis added 15. The Vikings trailed 30-27 at halftime but rallied for a 43-41 lead after three quarters. Cape's Tim Widdoes nailed a pair of three-pointers.
Cape Henlopen 67, Laurel 59
The Vikings took a 40-26 halftime lead and then held on in the second half to rise to 6-2 in the Henlopen North and 6-4 overall. Laurel cut the lead to 48-45 at the end of the third quarter but the Vikings sealed the victory in the fourth. Julius Hazzard paced Cape with 17 points. Point guard Pat Woods and Tim Widdoes each scored season-highs with 15 points apiece. Guard Darrell Davis added 11 more.
Cape Henlopen 68, Dover 57
Cape overcame a 9-point third quarter deficit behind Darrell Davis. The Vikings trailed 46-37 in the third quarter but in the fourth quarter held the Wildcats to only 2 points while scoring 13. Davis scored 6 of his 18 points in the fourth to help Cape rise to 5-2 in the Henlopen North and 5-4 overall. Julius Hazzard added 11 points.
Cape Henlopen 68, Dover 57
Cape put three players in double figures and overcame a 20-13 first quarter deficit to record its second straight victory in the Henlopen North. Darrell Davis led the Vikings with 22 points including three 3-pointers. Forward J.J. Hazzard and point guard Patrick Woods scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, to help the Vikings rise to 4-2 in the North and 4-4 overall. Cape outscored the Senators 44-22 over the second and third quarters to overcome its slow start.
Cape Henlopen 66, Caesar Rodney 55
Darrell Davis' 18 points helpd the Vikings stop a four-game losing skid to rise to 3-2 in the Henlopen North and 3-4 overall. Cape standout J.J. Hazzard managed only 4 points but point guard Pat Woods and center Tom Sheehan made up for some of the scoring with 8 points apiece. The Vikings led 33-22 at halftime and unlike their previous four losses, didn't falter in the second half.
Crisfield (Md.) 87, Cape Henlopen 72
The Vikings fell victim to the Crabbers' outside marksmanship for their fourth straight loss. In falling to 2-4 overall, Cape saw Crisfield hit 8 of 16 three-pointers, including a 6 of 14 performance by Andre Collins, who finished with 35 points. The Vikings were led by guard Darrell Davis' 32 points and forward J.J. Hazzard's 18 points. Cape point guard Patrick Woods collected 6 steals and dished out 4 assists. Cape was done in in the second and third quarters when it was outscored 47-32.

Sussex Central 58, Cape Henlopen 54
The Vikings dropped their second straight to an unbeaten team to fall to 2-2 in the Henlopen North and overall and fall 2 1/2 games behind division leader Sussex Central. Darrell Davis poured in 25 points including three three-pointers and J.J. Hazzard contributed 16 more but the Vikings were outscored 18-10 in the final period to lose a double-digit third quarter lead for the second game in a row. Cape led Central 34-24 at halftime and widened the margin to 11 points in the third quarter but saw the lead whittled down to 44-40 by the end of the third period.
The Vikings now prepare for the Mayor's Cup bracket of the Slam Dunk to the Beach tournament.

Cape Henlopen 63, Polytech 47
The Vikings stayed unbeaten and atop the Henlopen North with Sussex Tech and Sussex Central with the division victory. Missing team leader J.J. Hazzard, who left the team's season-opening victory over Seaford with a gash in his head, the Vikings turned to Darrell Davis, who responded with a game-high 24 points. Pat Woods and Dwayne Holloman helped fill Hazzard's void, too, with 13 points apiece. Cape played only 6 players.
