State Tournament 1st Round Laurel 86, Sussex Central 76 (2OT) The Golden Knights couldn't overcome the loss of leading scorer James Cannon and both starting guards to foul trouble in the second overtime as their season concluded at 14-8. James Cannon led the Knights with 21 points but fouled out in the first overtime, when both teams scored 13 points to force a 70-70 tie and a second overtime. Laurel point guard Titus Mims took advantage by scoring 10 of his 40 points in that second overtime period. The Knights trailed early in the game but went on a 12-1 run to end the first half ahead 28-25. They then forced overtime when George Davis sank a three-pointer to tie the game 57-57 with 18 seconds left in regulation. Orlando Farrow scored 10 points for Sussex Central. Sussex Central 62, Sussex Tech 59 The Golden Knights pulled off the season's biggest upset by handing their rivals their first conference loss of the season. In rising to 11-7 in the Henlopen North and overall, the Knights used an offensive rebound for two free throws by James Cannon with 6 seconds left and held their breath as Brian Polk's three-pointer bounced off the backboard in front of a capacity home crowd in Georgetown. Cannon finished with 16 points while Orlando Farrow contributed 14 and Tony Cintron chipped in with 12 points and 6 assists. Sussex Central 65, Woodbridge 48 The Golden Knights started fast, leading 14-2 after the first period. James Cannon sparked Central with 24 points. Travis Leonard added 16 more. Cape Henlopen 57, Sussex Central 54 The Golden Knights fell behind by 16 points then rallied in the fourth period only to come up short. James Cannon led SC with 15 points. Travis Leonard added 11 more. Sussex Central is now 9-7 in the Henlopen North and overall. Laurel 65, Sussex Central 57 The Golden Knights fell victim to the Bulldogs' marksmanship from the foul line to slip to 9-6 in the Henlopen North and overall. Laurel nailed 24 of 25 free throw attempts in the game and took control with a 14-5 advantage in the second quarter. Dennis Sample scored a season-high 24 points including 4 three-pointers. James Cannon added 14 points. Polytech 67, Sussex Central 64 The Golden Knights lost a 5-point lead entering the fourth quarter to fall to 9-5 in the Henlopen North and overall. James Cannon led Sussex Central with 19 points. Orlando Farrow and Dennis Sample chipped in with 12 points apiece and Tony Cintron added 10. Sample and Cintron both hit a pair of three-pointers. Sussex Central 74, Seaford 67 The Golden Knights collected their second straight win behind James Cannon's game-high 32 points. Orlando Farrow and Anthony Williams scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Central, which grabbed a 42-26 lead at halftime. Sussex Central 72, Dover 57 The Golden Knights broke a two-game losing streak to rise to 8-4 in the division and overall. James Cannon led the Knights with 17 points. Orlando Farrow scored 13 points and George Davis chipped in with 10 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Central took control of the game in the first quarter with a 20-10 advantage. Caesar Rodney 60, Sussex Central 48 The Golden Knights were outscored 22-10 in the third period on their way to the Henlopen North loss. James Cannon was the only Knight in double figures with 10 points. Travis Leonard had 9 points including a three-pointer. Delmar 71, Sussex Central 68 The Golden Knights suffered a serious blow to their Henlopen North title hopes as they fell three games behind division leading Sussex Tech and into third place behind Cape Henlopen at 7-3 in the division and overall. James Cannon's 31 points, 7 rebounds an 4 steals led Central but his effort wasn't enough to overcome 29 turnovers. Sussex Central 70, Smyrna 56 The Golden Knights played their best game since the holiday break with the big win over Smyrna. In rising to 7-2 in the Henlopen North and 8-2 overall, SC got 16 points from Travis Leonard and 15 from James Cannon. Sussex Central trailed by two points at halftime but outscored Smyrna 44-28 in the second half. Lake Forest 67, Sussex Central 56 The Golden Knights suffered a major blow to their Henlopen North title hopes with the loss to the Henlopen South leaders. James Cannon and Travis Leonard paced the Knights with 16 and 14 points, respectively, but it wasn't enough to prevent them from falling to 6-2 in the division and 7-2 overall and 1 1/2 games behind division leader Sussex Tech. Sussex Central 68, Milford 56 (OT) The Golden Knights woke up just in time to subdue the 1-6 Bucs and stay a half-game behind Sussex Tech in the Henlopen North race. Sussex Central outscored Milford 16-4 in overtime to rise to 6-1 in the North and 7-1 overall. James Cannon rebounded from a sub-par performance in a loss to Sussex Tech on Tuesday night with 28 points against Milford. Travis Leonard and Leroy Mann scored 10 points apiece in the victory. Sussex Central 58, Cape Henlopen 54 The unbeaten Golden Knights, ranked 5th in the state, battled back from a 34-24 halftime deficit to claim sole possession of first place in the Henlopen North and set up an early season showdown for the division lead with rival Sussex Tech on Jan. 4, 2000. James Cannon led the Knights with 22 points against Cape. Travis Leonard and Anthony Williams aided Cannon with 17 and 13 points, respectively. Sussex Central 66, Polytech 41 The Golden Knights rose to 4-0 in the Henlopen North and overall with a half-game lead. Sussex Central began pulling away in the second period and put the game away with a 20-8 advantage in the fourth quarter. James Cannon scored a team-high 20 points while senior guard Tony Cintron contributed 10 more. Sussex Central 66, Seaford 55 The Golden Knights remained one of three unbeaten teams in the Henlopen North behind James Cannon's 27 points. Now 3-0 in the North and overall, the Knights are tied for first with Sussex Tech and a half-game ahead of Cape Henlopen. The Knights got a boost from Orlando Farrow, who chipped in with 14 points to make up for a two-point outing by Travis Leonard, one of the team's scoring leaders in the first two games. Sussex Central 63, Dover 46 The Golden Knights remained unbeaten behind James Cannon and Travis Leonard. Cannon scored 20 points and Leonard 17 as Central rose to 2-0 overall and in the North. The Knights took leads of 17-7 after the first perod and 32-18 at halftime and never looked back. Sussex Central 77, Caesar Rodney 60 The Golden Knights broke their Henlopen Conference Northern Division opener wide open in the third period by outscoring the Riders 22-7.
