LEWES -- Turning around a wrestling program is a monumental task, one that wrings every ounce of emotion out of a coach.

Sussex Tech coach Dave RogersThe tears in Sussex Tech coach Dave Rogers' eyes after learning that he was named the Henlopen Conference's coach of the year on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, were proof of that.

"This was unexpected," said Rogers amidst waves of well-wishers. "This tops off a great season. It was the first winning season at Tech. It's just been a great year. I don't know what to say. This is icing on the cake."

Rogers, in only his second year with the Ravens, has given the program its first winning season and its first individual conference champions this season.

The Ravens posted a 10-4 regular season record and continued the most successful season in their history with championships by Jimmy Hudson at 189 and Brandon Morrow at heavyweight during the Henlopen Conference tournament this weekend.

Besides Hudson and Morrow, the Ravens also qualified Brad Rogers (103), Kyle Isaacs (112), Wyatt Hall (135), and Robbie Twilley (161) for next weekend's state tournament at Delaware State University.

Rogers said turning the Tech program into a winner mostly required a healthy dose of discipline.

"I'm a very disciplined person and we've worked hard with a good work ethic in the wrestling room and it's paid off," said Rogers. "It's just been unbelievable. The kids have worked hard. That's been it."

Before coming to Tech last year, Rogers was at Sussex Central Middle School for 14 years. Although he is losing Hudson and Morrow to graduation, he is looking forward to the future with wrestlers like Rogers, Isaacs, Hall and Twilley returning.

"We've got a good nucleus coming back," said Rogers. "We're a young team, so I think things are going to be good for us for awhile."
