LEWES -- Delmar High School's Nathan Shearer has always been an outstanding wrestler, but as a sophomore at Connellsville (Pa.) last season, he never got a chance to show just how good he is. After posting a 32-3 record through districts last season, Shearer missed the PIAA state tournament due to injuries suffered in a car accident. That made his Henlopen Conference championship in the 152-pound class that much sweeter on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000. The unbeaten Shearer decisioned Caesar Rodney's Zack Kopp 12-6 in the finals to improve to 29-0 heading into the state tournament at Delaware State University Feb. 25-26. "I want to finish this up with a first at states," said Shearer. "I expected to do that at the start of the season. I was kind of disappointed last year but you learn from your mistakes." Shearer said he moved in with his brother in Delmar this year to help avoid the kinds of mistakes that caused his car crash last year. The move has paid off not only for him, but also for the Wildcats, who hadn't had a conference champion since current Delmar coach Matt West won a title in 1991. On the way to the finals this year, Shearer scored an 18-4 decision over Sussex Central's Raheim Brunskill in the semifinals and pinned Woodbridge's James Faulkner in 4:52 in the quarterfinals. "There are a whole bunch of good wrestlers in Delaware but you don't find as many of them as you do in Pennsylvania," said Shearer in comparing Delaware wrestling to the wrestling crazed state of Pennsylvania. "There's a lot of good talent here. It all depends on how you motivate yourself." |
