Blades, population 885, dates to the 1700s but was one of the last of Sussex County's unincorporated areas to incorporate. Blades was named Bladesville in the mid-1800s when one of the early railroad pioneers, James Blades, bought that the land the town sits on. Bladesville became a residential community that attracted artisans who worked in neighboring Seaford.
