Laurel native Nathaniel Mitchell was born in the town in 1752. A federalist, Mitchell served as governor of the state of Delaware from 1805-1808. Mitchell was commissioned as adjutant of the militia in 1775, promoted to captain in 1776, and appointed brigade major in 1779. His political career included service in the Continental Congress from 1786-1788 and in the Delaware General Assembly from 1808-1812. Mitchell died in 1813. A member of the Old Christ Church near Laurel, Mitchell was buried in the church yard. |
