Ocean View Delaware has a population of 1,006 but that is expected to more than double in the next decade with the annexation of the Bear Trap golf course and development, which plans more than 700 homes on the southwest side of the community. Ocean View is fast becoming a bedroom community for the neighboring summer resort of Bethany Beach, with retirees and vacationers building and buying homes in town.
The town was founded in 1688 as a 500-acre tract of land given to Matthew Scarborough by Lord Baltimore. Legend has it that a young man climbed a tree in the area and saw the ocean -- hence, the name Ocean View.
Incorporated in 1889, Ocean View became the birthplace of the broiler chicken industry in 1923 when Cecile Steele raised her first commercial flock of broiler-fryer chickens. The business she started has evolved into a billion-dollar industry producing more than 500 million birds annually and employing more than 20,000 people throughout the country.
Today, Ocean View's business community is largely comprised of service businesses on Route 26. The town has a park with a picnic pavilion and modern playground equipment and is home to Lord Baltimore Elementary School, rated one of the best elementary schools in the state.
